3. Assessment
Each child applying to Hyde Academy must take the following assessments:
We divide our process into two important steps.
The first step includes assessments for admissions. These are the tests and interviews that allow us to know whether your child is a good fit for Hyde Academy. If your child demonstrates proficiency during this first step, he or she will be invited to join us for the next phase.
The second step includes assessments for placement purposes. These assessments help us to understand where your child will fit within our program and how we can best arrange a program to suit his or her needs.

- to complete a reading and writing test in Chinese, which provides insight into how well your son or daughter can understand texts and express his or her thoughts in the primary language.
- to take a quantitative math test, which helps us to understand how well your child understands core math concepts.
- to take a non-verbal test, which gives us insight into your child’s capacity for learning and ability to think critically.
During the testing phase, a non-native Chinese speaking student will be asked:
- to interview in English, which provides insight into his or her thinking and communication skills.
- to complete a reading and writing test in English, which provides insight into how well your son or daughter can understand texts and express his or her thoughts in English.
- to take a quantitative math test, which helps us to understand how well your child understands core math concepts.
- to take a non-verbal test, which gives us insight into your child’s capacity for learning and ability to think critically.
We will also invite your child to sit in a class to help us understand how he or she interacts with peers and adults in our environment.
Finally, we will speak with you as parents to better understand your child and your expectations as a family.
The time for the initial assessment period varies depending on different grades. The assessment phase takes about 2.5 to 3 hours to complete.
During the placement phase, your child may be asked:
- to take a MAP (Measure of Academic Progress) test, which shows us where your child falls in comparison to his or her peers in the U.S. and internationally.
- to provide us with a writing sample in English (for non-native English speakers) or Chinese (for non-native Chinese speakers), which allows us to understand where your child’s gaps are in the writing process and how that compares to his or her peers.
- to interview in English (for non-native speakers) or in Chinese (for non-native speakers), which gives us insight into his or her ability to understand verbal and visual cues and express him or herself in oral English or Chinese.
The placement phase takes about 2.5 to 3 hours to complete.
For students who have a working knowledge of Chinese, we use HSK assessments to determine his/her level in Mandarin.
4. School Review
Once all the application documents have been received and the initial assessments have been carried out, the student’s application will undergo a thorough review by the Admissions Committee. Each student’s application to Hyde Academy will be given careful consideration and we will endeavor to communicate a decision about acceptance within one week after the receipt of the final application and assessment materials. In some cases additional follow-ups may be required to help us make a final decision. In reviewing applications, we are looking for students:
- who are motivated and committed to achieving real academic success and personal growth
- whose academic performance aside from ESL or CSL ability is average to excellent
- who have demonstrated good conduct and respect for others in the past
- who are interested in committing themselves to the Hyde Academy vision, mission, and educational philosophy
